ADVANCE AUSTRALIA WHERE?

Travelling down the information superhighway.
KERRY STOKES delivers the 1994 BOYER LECTURES
on Radio National
Thursday
Oct 20 at 8.30am
[repeated 9.30pm]
continuing for six weeks..

What should we be building
Who should own it
Is it necessary
Will there be a demand for it
Will it pay for itself
Are there other alternatives

As head of a business empire
that has many media interests
including the Canberra Times,
the Western Australian-based
Golden West Network and the
Gold Coast Mail, Kerry Stokes
has strong views about media
in Australia.
In this year's Boyer Lectures
- Advance Australia Where -
Travelling down the Information
Superhighway,
Kerry Stokes shares his views
on a subject which he feels
passionately about - namely
the communications media and
the exciting challenges
offered by new technology as
we approach the 21st century.
Putting passion aside, he
steps back to look
dispassionately at the new
communications technologies
and their immediate and
potential impact on Australia
and expresses strong views on
the preservation of our unique
culture and identity.
Mr Stokes will look at the
economic, political,
regulatory and cultural issues
thrown up by our move into the
era of the information
superhighway. He expresses
concern at the rather
haphazard approach Australia
has taken in relation to the
introduction of new
communications technology. In
his view, if nothing changes
we could find ourselves
swamped by an overcapacity of
technology and an influx of
foreign product that could
have a profound impact on the
shape of our society.
He warns of the folly of
jumping too quickly in to
building an information super-
highway to every house in
Australia and describes the
consumer as a blindfolded
backseat passenger without a
seatbelt.
In relation to the
communications technology
juggernaut it is time for us
as Australians to take the
blindfold off and take control
of the steering wheel. We have
to ask ourselves what we want
from our media and
communications industries.
Knowledge is power and it is
up to us to inform ourselves
and this means pressuring
those we delegate to govern us
to keep us informed.

During the series of six Boyer
Lectures on Radio National, Mr
Stokes discusses:
* the introducion of the
superhighway as a national
infrastructure
* the ownership, cost, manner
and timing of the introduction
of the information
superhighway...
* Australia's cultural
identity
* social impact of the
choices
available
* equity of access (both
remote and urban areas)
* the contentious issue of
media ownership
* the thorny issue of media
regulation
* standards and ethics of
media workers
* appropriate balance between
foreign and domestic product
* the need to act to ensure
diversity of content, so the
product would reflect the true
range of Australian culture
* who should be the arbiter in
terms of community standards

Describing Mr Stokes as a
trailblazer, the Chair of
the ABC Board Prof Mark
Armstrong said the 1994
Boyer Lectures would provide a
unique opportunity for all
Australians to share insights
into the future of Australian
communications and the effect
choices about media and
communications will have on
their lives.
In the last decade Mr Stokes
has been a thoughtful and
courageous leader in the
communications revolution and
an advocate and supporter of
Australian culture, said Prof
Armstrong.

The Boyer Lectures began in
1959 as the ABC Lectures and
was conceived as as
opportunity for the sustained
and informed exploration of
important ideas.
Broadcast right across
Australia on RADIO NATIONAL
commencing Thursday 20 October
at 8.30am (repeated 9.30pm)
and will continue for six
weeks.
If these lectures do no more
than act as a clarion call to
action, then as far as I am
concerned they will have
served their purpose.
